BMX Race Ljubljana: Italian Furlan takes double victory, Kevin Berginc takes the title

Italian Mattia Furlan (BMX Creazzo) is the big winner of BMX Race Ljubljana – he won both open races on Saturday and Sunday and is traveling back home with the hefty award. Slovenian hero of the weekend is new national BMX champion in the 17+ category – Kevin Berginc (Unior Tools Team) took third and fifth on open events and a national title. But elite guys were not the only one who showed spectacular racing – all boys and girls deserve credit for great show as well!

BMX Race Ljubljana was combined open race and national BMX championships, with age categories from under 9 years old all the way to big boys in the 17+ category. It was already interesting yesterday, with hectic finals and a crash that took local favorite Žan Godina (KK Črn Trn) out of the race for the victory. Furlan took the race yesterday, and was again fastest today. But stakes were higher today, since the national titles were also in the game, and Godina and Kevin Berginc were the only Slovenian who made it to the finals. So it was a battle for the prestigious victory and the title. Godina was again out of luck, this time he crashed on the third berm and Kevin just had to defend his position to take the title. Mattia Furlan was undisputed champion of the weekend, fast Italian was already racing for the national team on the BMX world champs and deserved the victories.

New Slovenian national champion Kevin Berginc: “Great race, great organization! Finally everything worked for me, and I got the national title. That was my goal for years, but something always went wrong – like dislocated finger or broken chain or similar. This is what I needed for the next week for the 4X world champs in Italy. I’m ready and I have high ambitions!”

68 riders from Austria, Italy, Hungary and Slovenia were racing in Ljubljana. As expected most of the top places in the kids and youth categories went to BSX Racing from Maribor and Črn trn from Ajdovščina, two teams that are doing amazing job with the young cyclists. But organizers from club Rajd also took some glory, Matic Sitar and Žiga Horvat took first and second in the U13 category.

Race weekend in BMX Park Ljubljana was great, but what is even more important is the upgrade of the BMX track. It now features brand new, hydraulic start gates that will enable even better training and will offer great support to all the kids in the Rajd’s cycling school. BMX has a nice future in Ljubljana for sure!
